Pseudagrion (A) hageni Karsch, 1893
Painted Sprite
Type locality: South Africa, no locality data available.
Diagnosis
Male is similar to P. kibalense and P. aguessi by (a) postclypeus all black; (b) entire dorsum of S7 black, rarely with small apical marking (in which case antehumeral stripe often half as wide as mesepisternum); (c) branches of cerci longer; (d) cerci with lower branch not bent inwards but in line with upper branch; lower branch bearing flange that ends with 1 tooth near base. However, differs by (1) ranging from Kenya and E DRC to South Africa; (2) face orange, rather than greenish to blueish; (3) postocular spots orange rather than bluish, and (almost) connected by orange bar across occiput; (4) thorax sides green rather than bluish, with long black interpleural stripe, often merged with metapleural stripe. Habitat description
Mostly streams, but also rivers (especially Cape subspecies) and standing waters, shaded by gallery forest, but sometimes in open areas in forest. Often calmer sections (like pools) with emergent vegetation, a sandy and/or soft (like muddy) bottom, and probably submerged roots. From 0 to 2000 m above sea level, but mostly below 1600.
